DYZPlastic Previews Android Mini Collectible Series 02

This image has no alt text

The first round of these little suckers were real fan favorites, so DYZPlastic is back with Series 02 of their Android Mini Collectibles. The small vinyl toys feature various designs and decos from contributing artists, and this year’s bunch even includes a figure drawn up by Google themselves. That would be the above Greeneon, a translucent version of our favorite robot Andy.

The Hexcode and Cupcake figures are also shown off over at DYZPlastic’s blog (check out the source link below). The new line will be hitting Dead Zebra and various other retailers in March. We can’t wait to see the rest!

If you’ve got all your gadgets Googled out, chances are you’re rockin’ an Android Phone and browsing the web with Google Chrome. Some of you may not know that your Android obsession can transcend mobile and land directly on your browser… and in your GMAIL! The folks over at ChromeSpot are helping you get your Android on within the confines of Chrome.

If you want to go for pure aesthetics, look no further than Android Theme for Chrome and the Android Theme for GMail. Not only will your browser tabs be ballin’ Android-style, but your inbox will be infiltrated by the little bugger as well:

Yes, that is correct… I have 14,000+ unread E-Mail messages, so when I don’t respond to you instantly, now you know why. I’ve deleted all the subject/senders as you can see, but I’m now realizing that this Black Hole of E-Mail is a realistic symbol of reality.

Other Extensions ChromeSpot recommends for Android Enthusiasts include Chrome To Phone, Android Market Link Converter, SpringPad for Chrome, and LastPass for Chrome. Head on over to their article titled Chrome Extensions for Android Fans for the full list. We’d like to tack on an additional extension sent in to Phandroid by a reader just hours ago: the Phandroid Chrome Extension.

The Phandroid Chrome Extension only does one tiny little thing but it does it very well – it links directly to Phandroid from your browser bar for easy access. I have one main question… why would anyone need this? I mean, everyone keeps at least one Chrome Tab open with Phandroid in it 24/7 right?

If you’re doing anything interesting that mixes Android with Chrome Extensions, please share with us all in the comments!

[Thanks Jared!]

Long Tweets are Long: TweetDeck Introduces Deck.ly, Updates Android App

This image has no alt text

Twitter was designed to allow you to communicate your thoughts, feelings, and current status in 140 characters. That’s the whole point of  Twitter, right? Short, succinct communication. TweetDeck wants to turn that idea on its head with the introduction of Deck.ly, a service that has a name likening it to the many URL shortening services out there, but in reality allows you to tweet out without fear of running out of characters.

While I personally am not a huge user of Twitter, and therefore can say that I think the idea of making those annoying updates longer than they already are is pretty silly, I’m sure some users will love the feature that can now be deployed via TweetDeck. Oh yeah, they have updated their full suite of apps, including Android, to support the functionality. Get the new version now in the Market.

Quadriplegic Uses Swype to Set Fastest Hands-Free Typing World Record

This image has no alt text

We’ve already seen Swype lay claim to aiding in the setting of a new speed-texting world record, but would you believe the virtual keyboard also played a role in taking the record for fastest hands-free typing into new territory? In just 83.09 seconds, Hank Torres, a quadriplegic paralyzed from the shoulders down, was able to swipe out the following:

"The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human."

This was accomplished through a combination of Swype and a head-tracking device. You can see the accomplishment for yourself in the below video.

CES leftovers: Hand-on the Motorola Droid Bionic, headed to Verizon in Q2

The HTC Thunderbolt should be the first Verizon 4G LTE phone, but the Motorola Droid Bionic might be the better overall phone if you are willing to wait a couple more months. Our resident Droid expert Sean Riley already gave his first impressions of the Bionic, but we also have another leftover video from CES that gives a quick walk-through of the device.

The Droid Bionic will be Verizon’s first dual-core phone and it’s expected to go on sale sometime in Q2 (rumors suggest May, but it could land earlier). The device runs Android 2.2 and features a 4.3 inch qHD display (540 x 960), Tegra 2 processor, 8 megapixel camera with dual-LED flash, VGA front-facing camera, 512 MB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, massive 1930 mAh battery, and micro HDMI connector with full UI mirroring.

Visit Motorola’s Bionic product page for detailed device specs.

Even though the Droid Bionic is slated for Q2, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it launch before that. Our friends at Droid Life already spotted an Amazon listing placing the device at $149 with 2-year contract and the demo unit we played with appeared to be final hardware. At this point, it only looks like Motorola and Verizon are finishing off the software portion.

If you are on Verizon and looking for a 4G handset, please let us know what you think. HTC Thunderbolt or Motorola Droid Bionic?
