It looks like AT&T has snagged itself an interesting little eReader/Tablet combo with the 9-inch Pandigital Novel. The tablet is Android based, connects to both AT&T’s network (with contract) and Wi-Fi, and also has access to the Barnes & Nobles digital store. The cost will be $279.99 on contract.

This isn’t the first effort by Pandigital who in 2010 launched a 7-inch device. Reviews were varied and not overwhelmingly positive, but we’re hoping they’ve polished up the Novel and made it… well, a novel little device.

It will be available later in January 2011. One unfortunate detail? The Novel can’t connect to Android Market. Hopefully some helpful rooters will uncover that capability.

Yeah, it will still be a little while before the Vibrant and its brethren of US Galaxy S phones gets Android 2.2 (let alone 2.3), but that shouldn’t stop you from considering a great deal on the handset from T-Mobile. If you purchase the phone online with a new two-year contract or an extension of your old TMo ball and chain you can walk with the Samsung Vibrant for free (or sit and wait for it to ship, rather) today. Get at it, folks.

CES 2011 live from Las Vegas Jan 4-9

The largest electronic trade show of the year kicks off this week and we’re flying the whole Android and Me team to Las Vegas to get all up in it. Taylor and Clark are flying in tomorrow, on Wednesday we’ll be joined by Nick, Anthony, and Sean. And at some point unbeknownst to me we’ll be joined by Chris Chavez.

We’ve got a couple of rooms right across from the convention center and we’ve RSVP’d for every party we could sniff out and we’ll do our best all week to share everything we can with you. In fact, we’ve got so many ways to keep tabs on us we thought we should make a post discussing the various way to intake updates.

live.androidandme.com

To keep track of all the action as it happens, we’ve set up a special live site at live.androidandme.com. We’ll all be posting to it all week, usually from the show floor or from behind closed doors as big announcements are made. When viewing the page, the site will update automatically, streaming our reports right to your screen as it happens. If you go away for a while, the page will keep track of the new entries and eagerly await your return.

On top of the streaming updates, we built in threaded comments powered by your Twitter or Facebook account. Simply connect using a button in the top right sidebar and you’ll be ready to dish on any individual update on the site (that’s right, we built thread comments into every single tiny status update- get talkin!).

CES widget

We’ve built a special CES-tracking widget that you can find at the top of the sidebar on every page of this site.

The widget will display our next two upcoming events, along with the five most recent CES posts and links to our live and archived CES coverage.

We’ll try to list only events that we think we’ll be live blogging from or that will produce a juicy post. So if you see something listed in the schedule that interests you, make sure to check back on the main site or on the Live site for all the action.

Twitter

We’ve got a lot of Twitter accounts, so I’ll keep it brief:

@androidandme, the main twitter account
@andmelive, all the updates from the live site
Our Team’s Tweets, a list compiled of all our personal accounts

If you’ll actually be in Vegas for CES or just have questions you want to pass along, Twitter will likely be the best way to get in contact with us. We all watch it like a hawk.

Of course we’ll be posting a ton of content to this site, we just wanted to present the above options for those of you that want the content as it happens. In summary: We’ll use the Live site for all sorts of tech-related CES news. We’ll use our Twitter accounts for all sorts of random silliness. We’ll post the meat and potatoes to this site once we’ve had time to digest them.

We’ll have staff in Vegas from Jan 4-9, so the posting on this site might be sporadic as a result. Sometimes we’ll have huge groupings of posts, sometimes we might disappear to track down the next story. We hope you’ll enjoy the ride as much as we will.

Online Tutoring

Children today are becoming so efficient with technology that they seem to know far greater at a younger age than many of us know in our thirties. It’s fascinating. But, with all of the attention being driven to gaming, phones, apps and computers, some of the curriculum that still carries heavy importance is getting less attention. With technology comes online tutoring opportunities that make technologically driven kids from grades K-12 and even college, excited to learn.

Even though there are software programs to make math easier for us, it is still critical that students do well in their studies. Those that aspire to go into law school with need statistics help and even calculus help as it is required learning.

Younger students may need geometry help, math homework help, algebra 1 help or algebra 2 help. Math can prove to be a challenging subject for any level, but doing well will affect the continuing education for students. It’s typical for students to complain that they don’t need to know algebra 2 for their chosen career. But, in reality, the commitment to learning is what is key and getting proper help will allow student to progress to their highest capabilities.

Rumor: Honeycomb to Require Dual-Core Processor, Hi-Def Resolution

This image has no alt text

New reports from OEMs who have been building tablets to spec for Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) state that there will indeed be a set of minimum requirements that must be met: the devices will need to have a dual-core processor (based on the Cortex-A9 architecture, which NVIDIA’s widely-used Tegra 2 chipset is), and the display will need to boast an HD resolution of 1,280×720.

This conflicts with what we learned from Google a few months ago where it was once believed Gingerbread – what is currently available as Android 2.3 – would need a lot of horsepower to play nice. If Bobby Cha’s claims are accurate, then Google just wasn’t telling the full truth: a future version of Android still may require a minimum set of specifications.

Though you might think only the most expensive of tablets will don Honeycomb and beyond, Cha says that we will still get “low-end” devices which meet these specs due to component costs lowering in the future.

Don’t panic, though, because we’ve heard time and time again – from a trusted source of our own – that Google’s going to create a less-capable fork of Honeycomb to work well with low-end tablet devices and mobile handsets. Cha’s report initially suggests Google might just stop at Gingerbread as far as software updates for handsets go, but I just don’t see that happening at all.

The Honeycomb story has yet to fully unfold. We may finally learn some concrete details soon at CES as Motorola is expected to be at the show to unveil their tablet, which is now being called the Motorola XOOM, and will supposedly be running Android 3.0

Although PCMag – the originators of this information – strengthened the likelihood of this being true by disclosing the name and affiliation of their source, we’re going to treat it just as we’d treat anything that doesn’t come from the horse’s mouth: it’s a rumor.

eLocity Aims to Bring 7 New 10 Inch Android Tablets Jan. 17

This image has no alt text

Stream TV have announced the existence of a line of 10-inch Android tablets that will be going on sale January 17th. They’re being called the A10 line, and its naming convention has models going from A10.1 to A10.7. They state that these will have the highest screen resolution available out of any tablet devices in the market today, but didn’t give any specifics.

But the screen size and resolution won’t be the only thing to drop your jaws at, apparently: it’ll run Android 3.0 and will be sporting an NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor. You’ll also be getting a microSD card slot, a USB port, and a 1080p-capable HDMI port in each of the seven models. Suddenly, eLocity’s just won the hearts (and wallets) of many-a tablet geek. We want to wait until we see this thing in action before passing judgment, though, so we’ll be taking a look at all of these at their CES booth in just a couple of days. Pre-orders go live January 17th at Amazon, MicroCenter, Newegg, Walmart, Frys, TigerDirect, BJ’s, and Sears.

Note: Tablet pictured is eLocity’s current-selling 7-inch Android tablet, the A7.

Opera for Tablets Coming, Android Version Naturally First

On the heels of CES and a smothering of tablet announcements and demonstrations, Opera has just announced a tablet version of their web browser, simply named Opera for Tablets. The quick promotional video doesn’t show much: it’s Opera, it loads web pages, and it does it fast. But Opera promises there is more to be seen and we expect those crumbs of details will be laid out on the ground right around the time the big name tablets are announced sometime this week – we’ve already been promised a look at the preview build on the CES show floor. Take a peek at the video below.
