A closer look at the Sprint Samsung Epic 4G Touch

The Samsung Galaxy S II has landed. You’ve probably seen the official press release from Samsung already, but we thought we would give you a closer look at the Sprint’s Samsung Epic 4G Touch.  Sprint’s variant of the Galaxy S II features a beautiful 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display and a body that’s only 9.59mm thick. Powering the handset is Samsung’s Exynos 1.2GHz dual-core processor which has already proven to be one of the most powerful and battery efficient processors on the market.

Other specs on the Samsung Epic 4G Touch include a 4G WiMax Radio, 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture and LED flash, front-facing 2 megapixel camera, 16 GB internal storage, Bluetooth 3.0, 6.66Wh  battery, an array of light, proximity, and g-sensors and a fancy new notification LED.

On the software side, the Epic 4G Touch runs Android 2.3.4 with the latest version of Samsung TouchWiz and will ship with quite a large collection of add-on apps and services. Samsung Media Hub, Kies Air, Swype, NOVA 2 HD, Polaris Office, Sprint ID and Sprint’s WiFi calling should be enough to make most Android fans have a heart attack. That being said, reports from across the blogosphere all agree that the phone doesn’t  suffer from all the bloatware.

Multiple reports claim that the Samsung Epic 4G Touch is quick and smooth when switching between home screens, launching apps, playing games, or watching HD videos. It’s nice to see that Samsung’s Exynos 1.2GHz dual-core processor can handle anything users can throw at it – even with all the extra “features” that carriers like to tack on.

On the hardware side, the Epic 4G Touch simply looks amazing. The curved edges and slim body are certainly pleasing to the eye.  Unfortunately there is little praise for how the phone actually feels when you pick it up. The phone is a lot lighter than it looks and the back cover will probably remind most of the same cheap plastic found on the original Samsung Galaxy S.

Priced at $199, the Samsung Epic 4G Touch is destined to be one of the hottest phones on Sprint’s network once it shows up in stores on September 16th. We’re not sure how many Epic 4G owners will be willing to give up their hardware keyboard for a touch-only device, but we’d imagine there are a few HTC EVO 4G users who are itching for an upgrade.

Are any of you planning on buying the Samsung Epic 4G Touch? Let us know what phone you’re planning to ditch to get your greasy fingers all over the 4.52-inch Super AMOLED Plus display of the Epic 4G Touch.

Sprint holding “Strategy Update” on October 7th, LTE on the way?

sprint-store

Sprint is holding an invitation only “strategy update” on October 7th in New York City, Engadget reports. Though we don’t know for sure what they will be announcing, we believe it’s safe to assume that the announcement will not be iPhone 5 related, but instead will focus on the future of Sprint’s next-generation mobile network.

As you may recall, Sprint told Engadget that they were going to outline significant 4G plans in the fall of 2011. Since that announcement, we’ve learned of a lengthy agreement between Sprint and LightSquared focused on the buildout of an LTE network. We’ve not learned much more about the arrangement since it was signed in June, but we can be sure that Sprint and Lightsquared likely have been actively working on the network over the past few months.

Also up on the rumor chart is a more closely knit partnership or takeover of Clearwire, which would also center around building an LTE network. Bloomberg noted a few weeks ago that Sprint was already in talks to potentially purchase Clearwire, which would expand their already existing partnership in the development of an LTE-Advanced network capable of delivering theoretical speeds of 100Mbps.

Though the picture of what Sprint will actually announce (and who they will partner with) is murky at best, it appears the number 3 network in the U.S. will soon have an LTE network to replace the WiMAX that has performed poorly against other carrier’s LTE and HSPA+ networks in PCMag’s network performance test.

Of course, we won’t know for sure until the eve of the event in October. We like a healthy bit of speculation here at Android and Me, and encourage you do to the same.  What do you guys think Sprint will announce in October? Be creative and leave us your thoughts below!
