Samsung Postpones Australian Galaxy Tab 10.1 Launch Event

This image has no alt text

A new wrinkle in the latest chapter of the Apple v. Samsung saga has appeared. After the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 was initially blocked in Australia pending further litigation, Samsung has announced that a media event coinciding with the launch of the tablet scheduled for August 11th has been postponed. It should be noted that Samsung still has plans to sell the Tab 10.1 in Australia, as they made very clear yesterday. A new date for the event has not been announced.

The release date of the LG Optimus 3D on Rogers in Canada is still up in the air, but shipments of the handset arriving at retail locations suggest it could be any day now. Recent whispers suggest a launch before August 15th, and this latest news makes that a likely scenario. The phone will be offered for $99.99 on a three-year contract or $474.99 without a commitment.

Google+ application updated, improvements galore!

google-plus-bar-arrows

Users of Google’s new social network Google+ are waking up today to an update to Google’s Android application. Version 1.0.5 of Google+ was released last night, and brings a host of bugfixes and much needed improvements to the notification system.

The full change list is as follows:

  • Improved notifications reliability
  • “___ added you to Google+” notifications shown in bulk
  • Share stream posts to individual people (search people & contacts)
  • Clicking a +mention takes you to the person’s profile
  • Stream no longer resets to top when screen is rotated
  • Nearby accuracy & refresh improvements
  • Start a one-on-one huddle from a person’s profile or a group huddle from a circle profile
  • Hide one-on-one huddles
  • Clickable links in huddles
  • Confirmation text when leaving a huddle (“Are you sure you want to leave?”)
  • Improved autocomplete (people/contacts) when adding a person to a huddle
  • Reshared posts show correct profile photo

The biggest enhancements are the top two on the above list. Notifications for Google+ will now be much more reliable. In the past, several users have complained of not receiving any Google+ notifications unless they manually launched the application. Others reported receiving notifications in the notification bar, but very infrequently and often would see the same notifications they already dismissed on PC show up as new in the application.

Another frequent gripe has been that when individuals add you to their circles on Google+, the Android application would show each instance as a separate notification. The browser-based version of Google+ had solved this problem by lumping all new circle additions to a single notification, and today’s update brings this functionality to the Android application.

Going down the list, it appears Google has fixed several of the things that were bugging Android Google+ users in the 1.0.5 update, and we highly encourage you to head over to the market and update the application if you haven’t already done so.

Are there still other things you want to see improved in the Android application that is not addressed in the 1.0.5 update? Sound off in the comments.

Seaate GoFlex Satellite HDD Now Serving Media to an Android Near You

This image has no alt text

When Seagate rolled out the GoFlex Satellite HDD back in May, the lack of an Android app was disappointing to say the least. The 500GB drive’s ability to connect to a WiFi network and subsequently stream big-honking HD videos to a mobile handset sounds like the sort of thing right up an Android lover’s alley. Months later and much to our delight, Seagate has finally launched the accompanying app for the number one smartphone platform in the world, and it’s free for all. Of course, the GoFlex Satellite doesn’t share such an accommodating price tag. The HDD will set you back $200 bucks, but if you have been looking for some additional storage and the mobile features sound appealing, this one is definitely a win-win. Press release below.

Seagate GoFlex Media App is Now Available From the Android Market

CUPERTINO, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Seagate (NASDAQ:STX) today unveiled a new app for Android operated mobile devices that will provide a seamless wireless connection to 500GB of storage to stream up to 300 HD videos. Introduced in May of this year, GoFlex Satellite™ mobile wireless storage is the first battery-powered external hard drive to wirelessly extend the storage capacity of any Wi-Fi enabled mobile device. Although previously compatible with Android tablets and phones by using the device’s browser, the experience with GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage will now be enhanced through the seamless connectivity and added features of the GoFlex Media™ App for Android.

Devices are wirelessly connected directly to the GoFlex Satellite drive by use of the free GoFlex Media App-available now on Android Market and iTunes for iOS devices-or a web browser. GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage is currently available worldwide for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $199.99 USD.

“Seagate’s line of GoFlex® external storage has always been about enabling flexibility and part of this flexibility is being OS agnostic,” said Patrick Connolly, vice president and general manager for Seagate retail product group. “Seagate GoFlex Satellite™ mobile wireless storage continues with this theme of flexibility by providing added storage to mobile devices where there may not be a physical port to connect a cable. An Android supported app had been part of our development plans for the product from the very start. We are now pleased to offer the new GoFlex Media™ App from the Android Market.”

The perfect companion for your mobile devices, GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage is capable of providing hours of entertainment for up to three connections. With a stand-by battery life of up to 25 hours, the powerful lithium polymer battery delivers up to 5 hours of continuously streaming video. To help with extending battery life, the free GoFlex Media App provides a progressive download feature, which temporarily loads the video on to the Android device it is being streamed to, allowing the drive to go into stand-by mode. In addition to extending the battery life, the GoFlex Media App for Android will deliver the following features:

Access your media library stored on the GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage device wherever you are – no Internet or wires required.
Stream HD videos and begin playback in an instant.
Enjoy music and video collections, photo albums, and even review documents. GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage allows you to take it all with you.
Automatically organizes all your digital media into videos, photos, music, and document folders.

The GoFlex Media App for GoFlex Satellite mobile wireless storage and Android mobile devices is available to download for free from the Android Market.

Motorola Confident in Patent Strength, Could Be Google’s Biggest Ally

This image has no alt text

Google and its manufacturing partners have been taking heat in the courts lately, facing patent litigation from the likes of Apple, Oracle, and Microsoft. While HTC and Samsung remain embattled, one company isn’t scared of potential lawsuits. It’s quite the opposite, actually, for Motorola. CEO Sanjay Jha did a bit of chest puffing at the mobile manufacturer’s recent Q2 earnings call, pointing to Moto’s deep patent portfolio focused on mobile handsets, 2G/3G technologies, and emerging 4G LTE innovations. Jha went so far as to suggest the patents could be used to “enhance shareholder value.”

Jha could be suggesting the company plans to due a bit of legal wrangling of their own, demanding licensing fees from others taking advantage of Motorola’s proprietary technologies. Perhaps he could be inferring the sale of some of Motorola’s patents to Google, a digital conglomerate not averse to buying a little protection (you may recall the recent acquisition of 1,000 patents from IBM). It could also be that Moto plans to sit on the patents, confident that their revenues will not be impacted by potential lawsuits. No matter how it plays out, Motorola is an important ally to Google and the Android OS in the fight over intellectual property. The manufacturer that brought Android from the depths and launched it to mainstream success could be a savior once again.

Video: Hands-on with the Logitech Revue’s Honeycomb update

google-tv

Now that we’ve told you how to update your Logitech Revue with the Honeycomb version of Google TV, it’s time to show you what you’ll get for doing just that. Brought to you by Channel Android, here’s a quick look at Google TV 2.0 running on a Logitech Revue.

As you can see, the whole Google TV UI has gotten an overhaul. Gone is the old Home page, which used to cover the whole screen. Instead, a new and less intrusive Home screen overlays the TV video feed with a bar along the bottom. From this bar, you have access to your most frequently used apps, notifications and a list of all the apps installed. These include, YouTube, Google Chrome, the Android Market, Clock and Podcasts, among others.

Google TV 2.0 also introduces widgets, which can be accessed and customized via the Home screen. As you can see in the video, adding, moving and deleting widgets is a relatively easy task. Customizing the list of apps on the Home screen bar seems to be just as easy to do.

Well worth noting, this Honeycomb-based version of Google TV is certainly running much smoother and snappier than the current version of Google TV. As it stands right now, Google TV always feels like it’s trying its best to keep up with your commands. But that doesn’t seem to be the case with this new version. And this is supposedly not even close to the final build of Google TV 2.0.

Not surprisingly, the Android Market is seriously lacking in the Google TV apps department. Considering Google hasn’t even officially announced this version of Google TV, we’ll have to hold our judgement on this issue until they do. Having said that, don’t expect more than a hundred Google TV-optimized apps to be available once the Market lands on your TV. Eventually, the most popular Android apps will have a Google TV version. But it will be a long and arduous process for that to happen.

Seeing how easy it is to install Google TV 2.0 on a Logitech Revue, you can expect more and more videos to pop up throughout the next few days. We’ll be updating this article with more videos as we find them, so make sure you’re following us on Twitter.

Hoping to Improve Tablet App Selection, Android Developer Labs 2011 Announced

This image has no alt text

Ever since the release of the tablet-centric Android Honeycomb, the platform has been taking flack for a lack of proper apps designed with the larger form factor in mind. With a newly announced series of developer sessions, the Android Team hopes to improve the body of software available for tablets and, in doing so, dispense with the criticism.

The Android Developer Labs 2011 kick off today in Bangalore and continue through the summer with sessions in Seattle, New York, and Los Angeles. The one day seminars are limited in space, so those wishing to attend must pass a two-step application process. After registering, a developer’s current offerings in the Android Market are assessed for their potential to be crafted into great tablet experiences. Once in, developers will be treated to sessions “aimed at optimizing Android apps for tablets, in particular creating high-quality tablet apps with an emphasis on polish and user-experience.”

Interested developers can head over to the source link below for more information on dates, locations, and the registrations process.

Video: Here’s how to install the Honeycomb update on your Logitech Revue

google-tv

Well, that was fast. Not even four days after showing us some photos of Google TV 2.0 running on the Logitech Revue, the same guys at GTVhacker have now put together an easy-to-follow set of instructions on how to install the much-awaited update on your Revue.

As always, we’re not responsible for anything bad that happens to your device while following the instructions below. Keep in mind that this is in no way an official or final build of Google TV 2.0. It could very well break your Revue. Also, the Netflix app is missing from this build. If that’s something you use on a daily basis, you might want to wait for Google and Logitech to officially update your device.

On the other hand, if you don’t care about possibly breaking your Revue (they’re going for $99 these days) you might as well go ahead and follow these instructions:

  1. Download the update file from here.
  2. Copy the update.zip to a Fat32 formatted USB drive, place it in its root (ie /mnt/usb/update.zip or E:\update.zip).
  3. Plug USB drive into Revue.
  4. Fully unplug Revue.
  5. Plug it back in, count to one. (A long one. Say, “One Mississippi”).
  6. Hold down the connect button and keep it held. The Revue logo will come up, and the box will reboot. Your TV will lose signal and come back to the Revue logo. Let go of the button.
  7. The GTV logo will then show up, with an arrow and a horizontal “barbershop scroll.” On your Revue’s keyboard, press the FN key (in yellow) and the left arrow (to the left of the OK button). It will then display a recovery menu.
  8. Hit “Apply update from sdcard:/update.zip”
  9. The box will verify the update and reboot. This is normal. It is installing an updated bootloader and recovery image (both heavily encrypted).
  10. The box will come back on and flash the latest kernel and system files. Once this is done, the box will reboot again.
  11. This bootup may take a few minutes. At first you will see the Revue logo, then the Google TV logo, then the “new” logo (a grey TV over a ball glowing red). Just wait it out.
  12. Begin setup as normal. You may notice some crashes; this software is still in beta. Just force close and continue.
That was pretty easy, no? If you ran into any problems during the update, you can always let us know in the comments or ask the “experts” over at GTVhacker. Finally, I leave you with a video of the whole process from the guys at Channel Android. Happy hacking!

NVIDIA Dual-Core Blowout: 5 Androids, 10 Cores, 1 Contest [PART 4]

This image has no alt text

We’ve already given away 3 Android devices in our blowout contest, each rocking an NVIDIA dual-core processor, and this week is no different. But at the same time this week is VERY different. Take a blazing fast 1GHz dual-core Android Tablet, give it a keyboard accessory that virtually morphs it into an Android Laptop, put it in a box and ship to the winner and whaddaya got?

The ASUS EEE Pad Transformer. TegraZone on the Transformer? Yes please.

If you’re unfamiliar with TegraZone you should get acquainted, but you’ll need an NVIDIA powered Android Device as NVIDIA only offers the app for devices with their processors – it’s a VIP pass of sorts. It’ll give you access to some awesome games – some of which are ONLY available on TegraZone and ALL of which are optimized for the Tegra Dual-core experience, ensuring smoothly rendered animations, crystal clear graphics, lightning fast performance, improved battery life and more.

The Transformer itself is one of the more interesting hybrid Android devices and has (rightfully) received a ton of fanfare. In addition to rocking the NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor, the Transformer runs Android 3.2, has 10.1-inch screen, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, HDMI-out, MicroSD Slot, 2 USB ports, 2 3.5mm headset jacks and packs a whole lot of Android awesomeness.

Want to win it? Read on!
