Next generation Kindle Fire to pack Nvidia processor?

Amazon tablets

Needless to say, the Amazon Kindle Fire has quickly become one of the most popular Android devices out there. For just $200, this tablet offers you the best bang for you buck, with rich media and apps available, as well as good quality/specs. There’s no doubt that if Amazon continues with its current practices, the company will grow much more in this field.

Now that the tablet is available and everyone is enjoying it, it’s time to start thinking about the future. What can we expect from the next generation Kindle Fire?

We don’t exactly know, but it should definitely pack a punch in the specs department. And it seems Nvidia might be working with Amazon to bring the next Kindle Fire. At least according to Canaccord Genuity analyst Bobby Burleson, who claims that the next Amazon tablet will be powered by an Nvidia processor, instead of a Texas Instruments CPU (Current Kindle Fire processor: 1 GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4430).

While this might be quite a jump, the odds are not that bad. We know Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang has already been eyeing Amazon as a customer[1]. Jen-Hsun Huang has mentioned his disappointment, and while they were not able to get a deal with Amazon for the current Kindle Fire, Tegra 2 processors should be fair game for lower-end tablets next year, when Tegra 3 will be ruling the tablet world. Here’s what Nvidia’s CEO has to say about the future of Tegra 2 and Tegra 3:

There are many segments of the marketplace that we serve now, all the way from very high design content tablets in 10-inch to now increasingly many 7-inch tablets that are coming out to the marketplace. There were a couple of design wins that I wish we had this year that we didn’t have. I already mentioned Motorola. We were surprised by the Amazon Fire. But frankly, we’re not going to be surprised again. And so we’re obviously very excited about Amazon and want to do our best to be a partner of theirs someday.Jen-Hsun HuangNvidia CEO

What could this mean for the end-consumer? Well, while all processors have their advantages and disadvantages, Nvidia Tegra processors are known for being especially good at media and gaming. And the fact that the screen is also becoming a bit bigger may mean that Amazon will put a greater focus on entertainment. If Amazon does happen to snatch some Tegra processors from Nvidia, this would probably mean that Tegra Zone games will be available for it.

Burleson also mentions a rumor that we have been hearing for a while, which is that the next Kindle Fire will have an 8.9-inch display instead of a 7-inch display.

As always, we’ll take this information with a grain of salt. After all, this information comes from “conversations with sources in the tablet supply chain,” so the information isn’t as reliable as we would hope. We should wait until Amazon/Nvidia announces this before we get our hopes up (or at least until more proof shows up). What do you guys think? Would you like an Nvidia processor on your next Kindle Fire? Would Tegra games make the Kindle Fire more enticing?

AT&T: T-Mobile’s spectrum will be ours, one way or another

merging-cloud-arrows

AT&T appears hellbent on getting T-Mobile’s precious spectrum, even if the FCC doesn’t give the full merger its blessing. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that should the deal between AT&T and T-Mobile fail, an outcome which is heavily favored at this point in time, AT&T and T-Mobile parent company Deutsche Telekom are already in talks to develop a joint venture which would pool AT&T and T-Mobile USA’s resources together to create a sort of combined network.

Details are obviously scarce at this point as to what the joint venture would look like, and whether the two companies would continue to operate largely independent of each other, or whether the companies would pool their staff resources as well and operate as a cohesive unit.

One thing’s for sure, despite seeing the writing on the wall, it appears AT&T is not backing down from this deal anytime soon. We’ll bring you more information as we get it.

BaconReader for Reddit finally reaches the Android Market

baconreader header

If you just so happen to be a Redditor, or user of social media in general, then you may have heard of an app known as BaconReader. It is a Reddit client that has been in the works for almost a year now. It has gone through multiple stages of alphas and betas, and today, it finally makes its official debut in the Android Market.

Nearly one year ago, when BaconReader was very first introduced, the Reddit client options on Android were incredibly slim. Since that time more developers have opened shop and released apps into the Market, but none of them are quite as nice as BaconReader has turned out to be. The app is plenty functional, with features like full profile support, color coded comments, full featured inbox, one-tap access to your favorite subreddits, Rageface and look of disapproval support. But that’s not where BaconReader excels. BaconReader blows the competition out of the water when it comes to design.

BaconReader is not only the best looking Reddit clients available on the Market, it’s one of the best looking apps period. There was a lot of time put into the design and user interface of BaconReader, and it really shows.

Also announced along with the release of BaconReader, is a glimpse into the app’s future. BaconReader has been acquired by OneLouder Apps, the developer behind FriedCaster and TweetCaster. Chris Arvin, the original developer of BaconReader, has said that there will now be an entire team of devs working on bug fixes, but he will continue to stay with the project and still lead design.

You can try BaconReader for free by using the Android Market download widget below. If you’d like to get rid of the ads in the app, you can do so for $1.99 as an in-app purchase. If you happen to give it a shot, let us know how you like it.

Happy Holidroid Contest: Quick Pic Challenge

This image has no alt text

You’ll want to sign up for AndroidForums.com for today’s contest challenge AND future challenges. Because DISQUS allows comment editing without timestamps, we’re unable to assuredly identify a winner using the Phandroid commenting system for time-based contests. Make sure you read each contest post carefully to make sure you’re doing it right!

If you’re unsure what this whole “Holidroid Contest” thing is all about, be prepared to get excited. From November 24th through December 25th, Phandroid is giving away a Kindle Fire every single day along with other great prizes like the Galaxy Nexus Galaxy Tabs, JAMBOX, SmarTouch Gloves, Android Phones, Android T-Shirts, Seidio Vouchers and more. Read our announcement post for details.

Who has won so far?

We’ve received a bunch of E-Mails from contestants wondering if they’ve won. We contact winners directly, but from now on we’ll put the previous day’s winner in each contest post so that you folks know for sure who the winner is. We’re also asking winners to take pictures of themselves with their box-o-goodies and will post them on the site in the New Year.

Yesterday’s winner was Adryan Maldonado who, hilariously enough, was the winning random comment with the following post:

Winners from the first 5 days of the contest were:

So what’s up for grabs in today’s contest?

Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire could be this holiday’s hottest product: at only $199 it’s not only one of the most affordable Android tablets, it’s also one of the best. That’s a killer combination. With a beautiful UI, great battery life, carefully curated apps/games, and an amazing array of media options thanks to Amazon’s Digital Content Ecosystem… the Kindle Fire is a sure win. Good luck winning one in our contest, but at only $199 it’s probably worth buying one just in case!

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

Everyone seems to be craving Samsung Android devices these days, and for good reason. Samsung makes some of the best hardware out there, coupled with great software integration, and the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus are two great examples of Samsung’s industry leading products. These devices were sponsored directly by Samsung, thanking our readers and forum members for their excitement, interest, and support over the past year. With a 7-inch screen, 1.2GHz dual core processor, 1GB RAM, MicroSD slot, camera that records in 720p HD, and screen that displays in 1080p HD, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus is a high end alternative to the Kindle Fire… and you can win BOTH in our contest!

Isotoner SmarTouch Gloves

Every single holiday season these SmarTouch smartphone gloves are consistently one of my favorite gift giving items. They eloquently solve one of the most fundamental problems a tech lover faces: using your device in cold weather. Wearing gloves usually prevents your touchscreen from working: take your phone out, take your glove off, use your phone, hand gets gold, shove phone in pocket, rush to get glove on. NO MORE! Isotoner’s SmarTouch gloves, designed in my colors and sizes for both men and women, has technology that passes the electrons your body gives off, through the gloves, onto the capacitive screen and allowing it to work. VOILA! Seriously. It works. Trust me. Try it… and you’ll love them forever.

Seidio $30 Voucher

With so much smartphone use comes battery drain. Thankfully, Seidio makes some awesome extended batteries that fit many smartphones, allowing you to get longer battery life with the same device. No more toting around a charger everywhere you go: just snag a Seidio and call it a day! Seidio also makes cases, holsters, and other great accessories for your smartphones. Check them all out here.

Box offers 50GB of free storage for LG and Sony Ericsson Android owners

boxnet

It’s a good time to be an Android user, at least if you own one of LG or Sony Ericsson‘s Android phones. Box is partnering with both these companies to offer a whopping 50 GB of cloud storage to individuals who own any of their Android devices. This level of storage trounces the 5 GB that HTC is currently offering to its Android users, though we expect HTC is already working with Box to up their free storage level.

LG will be the first of the two companies to offer the free 50GB of lifetime cloud storage, with users being able to access this storage deal effective today. Sony Ericsson will make this available to their Xperia customers very soon, probably by the end of 2011.

For those unfamiliar with Box, it is a cloud-based storage system that allows users to access files they’ve uploaded and/or linked to the clout from any device that has access to the internet. Personally, services such as Box have been invaluable to me to access my music, movies, and documents on my Android phone and tablet when I didn’t want to lug one of my laptops around.

If you own an LG or Sony Ericsson smartphone, you simply ought to head over to the Android Market and download the Box application. Once you set up an account on your LG smartphone, you should have access to their 50 GB storage level for free. Over the next few weeks, Sony Ericsson Xperia owners should see this benefit as well.

LG-Box Partnership Brings 50GB of Free Lifetime Storage in the Cloud to All LG Android Mobile Devices

Users of LG Android Mobile Handsets Are First to Receive 50 GB of Free Cloud Storage and Enterprise-Grade Security with Box for Android to Enhance their Enterprise Mobile Experience

SAN DIEGO and PALO ALTO, Calif., Nov. 30, 2011- LG Electronics Inc. (LG), a global technological force in mobile communications and Box, a leading cloud content management provider, today announced that LG would be the first handset maker to offer 50GB of free cloud storage via Box for Android on all LG Android mobile devices. LG users who sign up for an account with Box through their LG Android mobile devices between November 30, 2011 and March 31, 2012 will enjoy the benefits of free, secure cloud storage and sharing for the lifetime of the account.

“With 50GB of free cloud storage from Box combined with world-class LG Android mobile devices, LG users are provided with cloud computing capabilities to support secure content management, collaboration and productivity on the move,” said Ki S. Kim, corporate vice president and head of Global Enterprise Mobility Solutions (B2B) at LG Electronics. “We will continue to set the standard in the enterprise mobility space by introducing innovative, cutting-edge solutions to enhance the mobile experience of enterprise users.”

“Android mobile adoption is growing at an unprecedented rate and by working with LG, we are bringing the full power of the cloud to those users,” said Aaron Levie, co-founder and CEO of Box. “To take full advantage of mobile computing, it is essential that users never have to worry about storage limitations, and we believe that LG’s efforts combined with the capabilities of Box will be a turning point for both the mobile device and cloud storage categories.”

According to a recent Gartner report, the Android operating system accounted for 52.5 percent of smartphone sales to end users in the third quarter of 2011, more than doubling its market share from the third quarter of 2010. LG, as one of the worldwide leaders in mobile, has released a line of sleek and powerful Android devices this year including the Revolution 4G LTE, Thrill 4G, Marquee and most recently, DoublePlay.

This joint storage offering culminates from LG’s efforts in establishing a solid portfolio of enterprise mobility solution offerings through a robust partner ecosystem. It complements LG’s current suite of solutions encompassed within four major categories – mobile device management and security, mobile virtualization, unified communications and cloud computing. As a leading player in the B2B enterprise sphere, LG has gained industry recognition for its manufacturing expertise and integration of mobility solutions into smartphones. Just recently, the Revolution™ by LG with VMware Horizon Mobile™ – the world’s first LTE 4G dual-persona smartphone – was announced as an Honoree of the International CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Awards.

With secure file sharing and storage from Box, LG is poised to support users’ demands for access to content from their mobile devices in both their personal and professional lives. Today, Box helps more than seven million individuals and 100,000 businesses, including 82 percent of the Fortune 500, share and manage all their content in the cloud and from mobile devices. Now, LG device owners will realize the full benefits of the Box platform, leveraging the Box app to:

  • Manage an immense amount of content in the cloud with 50GB of free storage, the equivalent of approximately 50,000 docs, photos and presentations.
  • View, upload and share all types of content from anywhere.
  • Leverage Box’s open platform to securely access and share information across devices and applications with extreme ease.
